Richard E. “Buck” Hopper, Jr. has been engaged in the private practice of law for 30 years, the last 21 as a sole practitioner, concentrating in the areas of estate planning, wills, trusts, probate, entity formation, business transactions and representation, and real estate. He has been rated AV, the highest peer review rating available through Martindale Hubbell. His mission is to provide competent, professional, personal service, while meeting the client’s needs on a timely basis.

A native of Boulder, Colorado, Buck attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, graduating with honors from the College of Business in 1975. He attended the College of Law at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, graduating in the top 20% of his class in 1978, with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. After working for two law firms in Colorado and becoming a partner, and then managing partner, of one, he established his own firm in 1987. Buck is also an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP).

Buck has been married to his wife, Connie, for 31 years. She works with him in his law practice. They have two married children. Buck has served on boards of and been involved with various civic and charitable organizations over the years, and is active in his church. He enjoys golf, history and travel. He is a member of the Boulder County Bar Association, the Colorado Bar Association, the Boulder County Estate Planning Council and the Trusts and Estates Section of the Colorado Bar. He is admitted to practice law in all state courts in Colorado and in Federal District court in Colorado.

Over the years, Buck has concentrated his practice in the following areas:

ESTATE PLANNING, PROBATE AND ESTATE ADMINISTRATION A major component of Buck’s practice involves working with individuals to solve their personal and business estate planning and succession needs. From the preparation of simple wills, to trusts, to advanced estate planning, Buck has helped hundreds of individuals with their estate and succession planning needs. His practice involves all aspects of gift and estate tax planning, generation-skipping tax planning, charitable giving, planning with life insurance, family business succession planning, and advanced gift and estate tax planning techniques. In addition to estate planning, Buck’s practice includes probate and estate administration, the representation of clients on contested probate issues, estate tax preparation and filing, and post-mortem estate planning. Buck has spoken to various groups over the years on a variety of estate planning topics. He is a past president of the Boulder County Estate Planning Council.

BUSINESS Buck has extensive experience in entity formation and all aspects of business and commercial transactions, including the sale and purchase of business assets, corporate stock transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and general business representation. He provides counsel and assistance in evaluating opportunities, determining the best entity to fit a client’s specific situation, and in analyzing the financial, legal, tax and regulatory requirements which may be involved. Buck is legal counsel for a number of local businesses, several of which he has continuously represented for over 25 years, advising his clients on a wide variety of legal, tax and business issues. His considerable experience in negotiating and drafting various contracts and legal documents necessary to successfully represent the client, from pre-incorporation agreements and letters of intent, through the due diligence process, financing and closing of the transaction, permits him to fully service the needs of his business clients.

REAL ESTATE Complimenting the estate planning and business areas of practice, Buck has also been involved in all facets of real estate law over the years. He represents clients in both residential and commercial real estate transactions and disputes. His experience includes contract negotiation and preparation, title examination and review, financing, working with governmental authorities in land use regulation, zoning, annexation and subdivision issues, and in dispute resolution and litigation in such areas as mechanic’s lien claims, foreclosures, quiet title actions, and condemnation proceedings. Buck also has broad experience negotiating and drafting commercial and residential leases, either in conjunction with a business transfer or refinance, or directly involving the lease agreement itself, on behalf of landlords and tenants.
